On August 1, 2008, Dr Emil Chynn of Park Avenue Laser performed LASEK surgery on both of my eyes. I had a prescription of -6.5 and an astigmatism in both eyes and had been wearing glasses or contacts since I was about 7 years old, so just to wake up and see my alarm clock in the morning has been a blessing!
The main question that friends and family asked me before the procedure was, “Are you nervous about losing your sight?” Honestly, I had the upmost confidence in Dr Chynn and his staff in correcting my vision without a hitch. My main concern was whether or not I could financially afford it. As an actor, simple “survival” has proven to be a major theme in my life; however, the staff at Park Avenue Laser worked very closely with me to figure out financing options to make it viable for me without sacrificing their integrity or my confidence in the office.
The entire staff was extremely helpful and friendly overall. They had offered me any and all of the information that I needed to feel comfortable with the procedure. I know that these surgeries do have some chance of complication, so training and expertise are certainly important, which Dr Chynn most certainly has. In addition, Dr Chynn performs the safer, no-cut, bladeless LASEK surgery vs. the older LASIK procedure which involves cutting a flap on your eye. The biggest draw for me was how forthcoming Dr Chynn was with his training, his costs, his payments options, his expectations for my vision, etc. I was always aware that Park Avenue Laser is first and foremost a business (as are any of these centers…the surgery IS a “luxury/cosmetic” purchase), but it is one that I felt like I could trust.
Within 3 days of surgery I was back auditioning for shows and after only a little over a week, my vision is pretty great and improving on a daily basis. Many thanks to Dr Chynn and his staff for all of their help!

I would like to get surgery to get rid of my glasses but I would like to know what is the best and safest one to do out of lasik and all the other ones? not passing $2500 and have some type of financing or something
The cost of Lasik varies greatly depending upon where you are, which clinic you select, and your specific needs. Conventional Lasik may be as low as $599 per eye, but your needs may require higher technology. Only a comprehensive examination from a competent Lasik doctor can provide you this answer.
I work for a nonprofit Lasik patient advocacy. We do not provide Lasik, just Lasik information and we certify Lasik doctors’ patients’ outcomes.
Lasik is considered medically safe and effective, but you should also consider the alternative PRK or its cousins LASEK and Epi-Lasik. They have some advantages over Lasik, if they are appropriate for you. All vision correction surgery is surgery and has risks as well as benefits. Become informed and make the best decision for you.

I have horrible vision (+6 in both eyes with astigmatism in both eyes), but luckily I have been approved to get LASIK surgery by my doctor. However, the procedure costs $4000. I’m only 18, so I don’t have any credit, and my parents have bad credit. I have been denied by the Chase Medical loan place, and my doctor said that if they denied me then most likely the Berkley Eye Center will deny me their financing option as well. I’m kind of in a hurry because I am about to go off to college later this month (August 22), and I don’t want to deal with my extremely uncomfortable contacts or my embarasing glasses. Any advice would be appreciated.
A couple of questions: do you have medical/vision insurance? If yes, check with them to see if any portion of the cost would be covered by them. This might lessen the amount you have to pay.
Is the doctor willing to set you up on a payment plan?
Do you have another family member, with good credit, who might be willing to co-sign a loan for you?
