Beautologie – “Botax” Has More People Rushing To Doctor’s Office for Botox – KERO 23 Bakersfield

January 17th, 2010 -- Posted in finance lasik surgery | No Comments »

Taxing cosmetic procedures like tummy tucks, liposuction and Botox could help finance the trillions of dollars needed for health care reform, that’s if some politicians have their way.

While it just an idea floating around as of right now, Dr. Milan Shah of Beautologie Medical Group in the Southwest, said he is already seeing people rushing in to get procedures done before the tax hits.

Kathy Cronkhite is one of those patients. She wanted to get Botox now before she ended up paying more.

Why do LASIK surgery costs keep going down?

January 10th, 2010 -- Posted in finance lasik surgery | 10 Comments »

I’m getting LASIK eye surgery tomorrow, and while researching the procedure I ran across some interesting data. The cost of LASIK has decreased ~70% since its inception, despite significant technological breakthroughs that make it more effective and less risky. Meanwhile general health care costs have increased at an annual rate double, or more than double, the rate of inflation for the last two decades. The only difference that I can see is that LASIK is not covered by insurance plans, and hence the doctors who perform it must compete for business. And compete they do! I hear advertisements daily from at least a half dozen providers in my town of 150,000. My initial appointment was free, they saw me right at my appointment time, and quickly and efficiently diagnosed what procedure was best for me. They offer full financing, although with the PayFlex plan I have through work I can defer the cost of the procedure over the entire year tax free! My primary care physician, meanwhile, kept my wife waiting over 45 minutes the other day despite her being the only patient at the office. With the health care debate raging, is there anything we can learn from the LASIK people?

What is learned from the business of Lasik is that if people can decide *when* they need health care, prices can go down.

Lasik is an elective, arguably cosmetic, procedure. One cannot compare elective Lasik to general health care. You have Lasik when/if you decide to do it. Rarely is general health care so cooperative. A Lasik doctor is not dealing with an emergency who showed up with no notice while you wait for your appointment. There are no emergency Lasiks.

Lasik is assuredly a competitive business, and competition has lead to some rather large problems. When Lasik is advertised and promoted to the point that the public thinks you look in a machine, drop a coin, and the doctor pushes a button, then the public does not understand the risk of microsurgery on your eyes.

While it is true that Lasik is medically safe and the vast majority of people who have had Lasik would do it again knowing what they know now, Lasik’s reputation has been marred by a few individuals – especially early on – who saw Lasik as a business to make money and not as medicine to provide care.

Competition is good if – big IF – the consumer is fully informed and the consequences of a bad choice are limited.

Our nonprofit patient advocacy organization has spent over a decade trying to advise people on the true risks and benefits of Lasik and similar laser eye surgery. We evaluate actual patient outcomes and publish current Lasik results, we certify doctors whose patient outcomes meet our requirements, we publish the 50 Tough Questions For Your Lasik Doctor, and we have literally thousands of pages of information on our website.

Best of luck on your Lasik tomorrow. I sincerely hope your choice of surgeon was not based on the lowest bidder.
